Slovenian Citizenship

An individual can acquire Slovenian citizenship by birth or by naturalisation. The basis of blood ties applies in Slovenia. According to which a child acquires citizenship at birth through their parents, that is, not on the basis of place of birth. Children acquire Slovenian citizenship if at least one of the parents is a Slovenian citizen.  The simplest procedure for acquiring Slovenian citizenship is based on the Slovenian citizenship law of Jus sanguinis (right of blood), which allows foreign nationals to acquire the right to citizenship, regardless of their place of birth. For this, you don’t have to know Slovenian language thoroughly; you just need to have a basic knowledge of the history of the state, its culture and traditions.

There are three ways of obtaining Slovenian citizenship through a repatriation method: automatically, by application, and by adoption.

  • A child automatically acquires Slovenian citizenship upon birth if at the time of their birth the father and mother are citizens of Slovenia.
  • If the child is born abroad, then the child can acquire Slovenian citizenship if the parent(s) apply for Slovenian citizenship on its behalf.
  • Children adopted by Slovenian citizens may be granted Slovenian citizenship.

Through the repatriation method, one can obtain a Slovenian passport in less than one year.
